Description & composition

Whole cottonseed is the oil-rich seed of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum), recovered during ginning with a small portion of short fibre naturally remaining on the seed coat. Unlike most oilseed by-products, it reaches the feed market essentially unprocessed, keeping its oil, protein, and fibrous hull together in one whole seed. This rare combination makes it a valuable all-in-one energy, protein, and fibre source, delivering high-density nutrition to optimize intensive ruminant production systems.

• Species Limitation: Strictly intended for adult, functional ruminants. Not recommended for young calves, swine, or poultry due to their limited ability to detoxify gossypol.

Recommended conditions

• Moisture: Maintain seed at or below 10% to prevent mold growth, mycotoxin development, and heating in bulk storage.
• Temperature: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area with active air circulation to prevent hot spots and fat oxidation.
• Environment: Ensure strict moisture control to limit aflatoxin risk and keep dairy rations within regulatory limits.
• Handling: Keep the seed whole rather than ground or crushed; breaking the seed coat exposes the oil to air and accelerates free-gossypol release.
• Shelf life: 6 months under correct moisture and ventilation conditions to maintain nutritional and physical quality.
